Hair Loss In Children

Whilst fairly uncommon, children can sometimes suffer from hair loss. The most common type is alopecia areata, where bald patches appear on the scalp. Sometimes this can be triggered by a stressful event, such as the arrival of a sibling, moving house or a favourite teacher leaving school. Another condition sometimes seen in childhood is trichotillomania, or self-pulling of the hair. The child may or may not be aware of doing this. Prognosis is generally good, as long as the condition is caught early. Over a prolonged period, permanent damage can be caused to the hair follicles, impairing their ability to grow hairs.
