Hair Loss In Children

Whilst fairly uncommon, children can sometimes suffer from hair loss. The most common type is alopecia areata, where bald patches appear on the scalp. Sometimes this can be triggered by a stressful event, such as the arrival of a sibling, moving house or a favourite teacher leaving school. Sometimes the hair will spontaneously regrow, but sometimes it is necessary to consult a trichologist: Philip Kingsley have clinics in London and New York. Often a child will experience alopecia areata once, then have no further recurrence of the condition. However, it is known for being unpredictable.
ChildAnother condition sometimes seen in childhood is trichotillomania, or self-pulling of the hair. The child may or may not be aware of doing this. If suspected, advice should be sought from a Philip Kingsley trichologist, as the condition can mimic other hair loss conditions to the untrained eye. Prognosis is generally good, as long as the condition is caught early. Over a prolonged period, permanent damage can be caused to the hair follicles, impairing their ability to grow hairs.
