Hair Processing
Perming
Perming, or permanent waving is a chemical process that permanently alters the structure of the hair to change its shape from straight to curly or wavy. Perming solution is an alkaline chemical which reacts with the hair to break some of the protein bonds that give the hair its shape and strength. The hair is reshaped using rollers, and a neutralising solution is applied to stop the process and allow the bonds to reform to hold the new shape of the hair. However this process will inevitably result in the destruction of some of the bonds, and leave the hair more vulnerable. Perming previously permed hair can do a great deal of damage. Care taken during processing and ongoing conditioning is the key to a good result with minimal damage, and in expert hands excellent results can be achieved. Avoid perming if the skin on your scalp is inflamed or broken. Using Philip Kingsley Elasticizer helps protect your hair when used before the perm and helps restore strength and elasticity to your hair when used after the treatment. Elasticizer penetrates the hair, moisturizing from the inside. It makes weak hair stronger, it also protects your hair. Elasticizer helps prevent damage and breakage. It is essential to have consistent and regular intensive conditioning treatments to restore moisture and elasticity to your hair and prevent breakage. Use a deep conditioning treatment three to four days before and after each process, and always use conditioner after shampooing. For fine, limp hair that has been permed to add body, carry on using Body Building Shampoo and Moisture Balancing Conditioner. For best results with perming: Finish with Philip Kingsley Curl Activator, Philip Kingsley Maximizer, or Weatherproof Styling Froth to help moisturize, hold and style curls.
Straightening
This is a very similar procedure to perming, but instead of waving or curling straight hair, it straightens wavy or curly hair. Straightening Caucasian hair is generally referred to as ‘reverse perming’, using ammonium thioglycollate, the permanent wave chemical. Straightening Afro/Caribbean hair is known as ‘relaxing’ and is carried out using creams or solutions containing either sodium or calcium hydroxide. The chemistry of these processes is exactly the same as it is in perming, but it is potentially more risky. This is because it tends to be carried out more often, with a greater chance of overlapping, and the hair breaks in the overlap. Also, the act of ‘straightening’ the hair out during the processing can overstretch the hair shafts and leave insufficient elasticity for the hair to withstand normal styling procedures. It is always best to have straightening done by a professional who can carefully monitor the process. Chemical Straightening leaves your hair more vulnerable and may cause damage. It is essential to have consistent and regular intensive conditioning treatments to restore moisture to the hair and prevent breakage. Using Philip Kingsley Elasticizer helps protect your hair when used before the chemical straightening and helps restore strength and elasticity to your hair when used after the treatment. Elasticizer penetrates the hair, moisturizing from the inside. It makes weak hair stronger, and protects your hair. Elasticizer helps prevent damage and breakage. For all hair types; Philip Kingsley Straight Hair is a heat activated gel, which is rich in botanical extracts. This gel temporarily smooths, straightens and tames curly or frizzy hair. Straight hair works best when used in combination with Preen Cream for fine to medium hair or Smooth Cream for medium and coarse hair.

Preen Cream is a lightweight; leave-in emulsion contains moisturizers, shine serums, sunscreens and antioxidants. Preen Cream should be used as the final stage of the Philip Kingsley hair care routine; protection. For fine hair carry on using body building shampoo and moisture balancing conditioner.
For medium and coarse, curly hair types: Philip Kingsley Smooth Cream tames frizz and calms curls to leave hair superbly shiny, under control and protected. Smooth Cream should be seen as the finals stage of the Philip Kingsley care routine; protection. Use a deep conditioning treatment three to four days before and after each process, and always use conditioner after shampooing.
For Afro/Caribbean hair that is being regularly ‘relaxed’ needs maximum care, using remoisturising shampoo and conditioner. Appropriate protective cream should be applied before styling the hair..

Hot irons
The most popular of these at the moment are ceramic straightening irons. These can be safely used occasionally on hair in good condition. But be warned, continual use of hot irons, particularly on previously processed hair, is likely to result in damage. The tension on the hair can cause some thinning. Steam producing irons are less likely to dry out the hair – Teflon coated irons are best. But take care with all hot irons, do not leave on the hair for too long and do not pull excessively. Try not to go too near to the scalp, burns are painful and may become infected. Using Philip Kingsley Elasticizer protects your hair from hot irons by penetrating and moisturizing from the inside of your hair. Hot irons may damage your hair reducing moisture and elasticity, while Elasticizer protects, moisturizes and adds elasticity. For all hair types Philip Kingsley Straight Hair is a heat activated gel, which is rich in botanical extracts. This gel temporarily smooths, straightens and tames curly or frizzy hair. Keratin Hair Treatment/Brazilian Blow Dry
This method is the latest in taming frizzy hair. None of the companies that supply Keratin hair treatments claim that it ‘straightens’, but it does ‘smooth’ the hair. They all claim that it improves the hair’s condition, but smooth hair always appears to be in better condition than frizzy hair. Keratin treatments do not work without the application of ceramic irons at a temperature of 230˚C (450˚F) minimum. In the long term, this can degrade the hair and there is not yet enough evidence of long term effects. Ask your salon for No Scent No Colour Shampoo and Conditioner as part of you Permanent / Brazilian Blow Dry. No Scent No Colour Shampoo and Conditioner are the ideal combination, extremely gentle and sodium/salt free.
