UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: LAVENDER

As we move into autumn, my clients with blonde hair often ask me how they can fix colour-fading caused by sun and swimming during the summer months. Many of them wish to avoid typical blonde-toning products, which can be drying and irritating to the scalp. That’s why I always recommend our Pure Blonde Booster Colour-Correcting Shampoo.

Specially formulated by our Trichologists, it banishes dullness and leaves hair looking radiant. Best of all, it has a gentle formulation that helps soothe and balance the scalp for ultimate hair health.

My favourite part of the formula? Lavender oil.

Soothing. Calming. Antimicrobial.

Lavender, known by humans for at least 2500 years, is thought to have originated in northern Africa and the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India.

It is also one of the most popular essential oils in aromatherapy. That’s not surprising: with its clean and refreshing scent, it is said to soothe headaches, boost sleep and aid relaxation.

Even better, for Trichological purposes: when applied to the scalp, lavender oil can help calm irritation and prevent bacterial growth.

Distilled and purified

Extracting essential oil from a lavender plant is a fascinating process. The oil is held in small, balloon-like structures at the base of the flowers, where they meet the stem. To obtain it, the plant is harvested at the peak of summer. Then, in a method known as distillation, hot steam is employed to burst the plant’s oil glands and evaporate the oil. The purified oil can now be collected by condensation, and used.
