FLAKY SCALP

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Why is my scalp always flaky?

If you have a flaky scalp, please do not be embarrassed: you are not alone, and there are many effective products available to treat it. You could be experiencing a flaky scalp for many reasons including: Infrequent shampooing, hormonal changes and fluctuations, psychological or physical stress or cold or dry weather and climate.

For immediate relief, there are many retail shampoos, scalp toners and scalp masks available. We suggest you use our award-winning Flaky Scalp Shampoo and Flaky Scalp Toner daily until your flaking has cleared.

One of the best ways to keep your scalp clean is regular shampooing. We recommend daily shampooing, focusing the product on your scalp and the roots of your hair.

You can also use a scalp mask. An exfoliating scalp mask is the perfect home remedy to combat flaking  scalps. Use a scalp treatment weekly to deep clean your scalp and help remove dead skin cells. Acting as both a scalp scrub and cleanser, scalp masks are very effective in preventing product build up on oily scalps and hair that is washed every three days or less.

Scalp masks help to deep clean your scalp and help remove dead skin cells. Acting as both a scalp scrub and cleanser, they are effective in preventing product build up on oily scalps and hair that is washed every three days or less. You can also get scalp masks designed to sooth and condition the scalp to help reduce flaking and reduce sebum on the scalp.

  • Infrequent shampooing
  • A diet rich in fatty, salty or sugary foods (particularly cheese, white wine and champagne)
  • Hormonal changes and fluctuations
  • Psychological or physical stress
  • Cold or dry weather and climate
  • Pre-Menstrual Syndrome

A common misconception is that flaking is caused by a ‘dry scalp’. However, flaking is usually found on oily scalps. Do not put or rub oil into your scalp as this will only make the flakes oiler and stickier.

For immediate relief, there are many retail shampoos, scalp toners and scalp masks available. We suggest you use our award-winning Flaky Scalp Shampoo and Flaky Scalp Toner daily until your flaking has cleared, and then alternate every other day with your regular shampoo for a couple of weeks after.

A scalp mask, such as our Flaky Scalp Mask, should also be applied once a week to help clear flaking.

Our Trichologists advocate shampooing regularly to help prevent the aforementioned oil, sweat and dead skin cell build-up on your scalp, and thus achieve an optimal, balanced scalp environment. Moreover, if using a medicated shampoo, this will allow for more frequent and closer contact with the active ingredients. To ensure a thorough cleanse of the scalp, technique is crucial: gently massage the shampoo into your scalp with your fingertips for 60 seconds and be sure to focus on the roots alone — never apply or rub shampoo on the mid-lengths and ends, as this can dry strands out.
