Will Colour-treating, Chemical Straightening or Perming Make My Hair Fall Out?

No, normal colour-treating and chemical processing will not make your hair fall out. In fact, processes such as bleaching may actually plump the hair shaft, making tresses appear thicker. However, we strongly advise taking special care of your hair if you process it with heat, dyes or chemicals!

All these culprits can cause substantial hair breakage if your hair becomes dry and brittle, due to the impaired barrier function of the outer (cuticle) layer of the hair, and weakening of the hair’s internal structure — and this can create the appearance of reduced volume over time.

More Information

The only form of hair loss associated with chemical processing is called traumatic or cosmetic scarring alopecia (also known as secondary cicatricial alopecia), and it is rare.

Scarring alopecia can occur if you burn your scalp when heat styling, bleaching or using straightening agents. Chemical reactions can scar your scalp — sometimes permanently destroying your follicles — if the injury is of sufficient depth.

Luckily though, this type of scarring alopecia is uncommon. The best way to help prevent chemical burns is to choose an experienced stylist, and to tell them quickly if you experience any discomfort.

To avoid experiencing an allergic reaction to dyes, we advise conducting a patch test beforehand — allergic reactions can occur even with hair dyes you have used before.
