Treats: Hair Thinning (also known as Female Pattern Hair Loss, Male Pattern Hair Loss, Reduced Hair Volume, Androgenic Alopecia)
What are Anti-Androgens?
Anti-androgens are prescription-only drugs, which may be taken orally or applied topically to your scalp to combat hair thinning.
When applied topically, anti-androgens may help to block dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from reaching your hair follicles. DHT is the male hormone (androgen) that triggers hair thinning in people with a genetic sensitivity to it. In their topical form, anti-androgens most commonly contain the active ingredient cyproterone acetate.
Anti-androgens may also be prescribed orally. However, oral anti-androgens are usually prescribed only to women, not men.
Who Can Take Anti-Androgens?
Topical anti-androgens, usually containing cyproterone acetate, may be prescribed to both women and men experiencing pattern hair loss.
Oral anti-androgens, usually containing either spironolactone or cyproterone acetate, are sometimes prescribed for female pattern hair loss. However, they are not prescribed for male pattern hair loss, due to the effects of the hormones involved.
Do Anti-Androgens Work?
When applied to your scalp in the right mixture, topical anti-androgens can be very effective at slowing and stopping hair loss — and sometimes even encouraging new hair growth. They are particularly potent when used in conjunction with minoxidil, which dilates your blood capillaries, making the absorption of anti-androgens into your scalp easier.
Oral anti-androgens can also be effective in slowing and sometimes stopping female pattern hair loss.
